The Week Ahead
Earnings season is really kicking into gear this week. With the usual early big hitters, INTC, TSLA & NFLX. Lot’s of regional banks still to report this week also so remains to be seen if that is going to be a bigger story or just an isolated event. I’m not seeing a lot of Perfect setups going into earnings on charts. I think NFLX and TSLA are decent looking, INTC too. Lesser known name XPRO also looks good in Oil & Gas. I’ll only be highlighting reasonable charts for earnings in the Week Ahead. I think this is better than me just highlighting well known names even if they are extended or have bad charts. This is an update in my own process so if anyone is wondering why I’m not highlighting a big name it’s probably because I think the chart is bad so even if it gaps it’s not going to hit my criteria.
On a Macro level we have US CPI on Friday Morning 8:30am ET as well as US PMI at 9:45am. There are no FED Speakers this week as they are in a blackout period until rate decision on the 29th. China are also holding an event to review the country’s next 5-year plan Oct 20th to 23rd. I’m not sure if this will have any market impact.
To state the obvious the market is shaky. For now I think we may just see some rotation into defensives for now while the market sets up again for small/mid caps. Earnings season should tell us a lot on what the next groups are going to be or if we just continue as is.

Theme Watch

Noting a bit of Strength in Oil & Gas names this week despite the volatility. Regional Banks also by the end of the week were still intact with a lot of them reporting this coming week. Note that Discount Retailers (DG, DLTR etc.) & Hypermarkets (WMT etc.) did well this week. Could be a shift to defensive stocks for a while. I need to do some work in adding some more Defensive groups to it. I think that might give more insight. These lists are something I’m going to build out over time. I am hoping by doing that rather than just trying to do it in one big go that I’ll pick up the right names in the right groups to give actionable insights going future. I have no interest in doing this sort of work unless out see an output from it that makes the boat go faster.
Earnings Highlights
I’ve changed the way I go through these. I still make my full earnings list each week but will now mainly highlight charts that have potential. I’ll ignore charts that I know will be very unlikely to be tradable even if the earnings are positive (i.e. no base, too extended, severe downtrend). This improves my efficiency during the week. I will still catch outliers through pre market scans and news sources. I do not trade in anticipation of any moves but this weekend work helps focus me on a chart that has potential if an earnings catalysts happens to hit.

PS: There are many ways to trade stocks in play. It does not have to be the one that keeps going straight up and sometimes it doesn’t even have to be day one of the catalyst. Everyone must find a setup, timeframe and method that works for them. This list is supposed to educate on the criteria I use and the methods in which I find Stocks in Play. Yours may differ and that is completely okay.
